For many Koreans, the 2002 FIFA World Cup was one of the most memorable sporting events in their lives. The games were held in Korea and Japan and millions of Koreans poured out onto the streets to cheer for the Korean team. I still vividly remember the quarterfinal match between Korea and Spain. As both teams were scoreless even through overtime, they went to the tiebreaker. The Korean goal keeper miraculously blocked the fourth kick from Spain, and then Korea succeeded on its fifth kick to win the game. The crowd went absolutely wild and Korea advanced to the semifinals. It was amazing as nobody expected the Korean team to do that well. Another sporting event that was memorable was when the Korean baseball team won its first-ever gold medal in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The Korean team didn’t even lose one game in that tournament and beat Cuba in the finals to grab the gold. Once again, it was truly another amazing moment.
